Bruce Edwards

Bruce Edwards made his start in golf at 13 years of age, carrying a bag for Dick Lotz at the Wethersfield Country Club in Wethersfield, Connecticut. After high school graduation, Bruce met Tom Watson at a hot, steamy tournament in St. Louis. He didn't know it then, but Bruce had paired up with one of his generation's best golfers.

Bruce caddied for Tom from 1973 to 1989, winning35 PGA TOUR events. One of their most memorable tournaments was Watson's victory at the 1982 U.S. Open and his unforgettable pitch on Pebble Beach's 17th hole. Edwards also joined Captain Ben Crenshaw's Ryder Cup Team in 1999 serving as a trusted advisor in Team USA's unforgettable comeback at the Country Club. Edwards then parted amicably with Watson in 1989 and briefly caddied for Greg Norman. They reunited in 1992 and worked together on the PGA TOUR, then shortly thereafter on the Champions Tour.

In the fall of 2002 while caddying at the Champions Tour Championship, Bruce experienced cramping in his left hand and slightly slurred speech. In January of 2003, after a few days of tests at the Mayo Clinic, Edwards was diagnosed with ALS. Bruce and his wife Marsha were introduced to the ALS Therapy Development Foundation (ALS TDF) in Washington, DC in April 2003. After a month of ongoing conversations with ALS TDF, the Edward had found the resources and support they needed from Driving 4 Life and ALS TDF.

Bruce, Marsha, Jeff and Kim Julian, and Tom Watson launched the Driving 4 Life campaign on June 16, 2003 shortly after Watson's famous opening round at Olympia Fields.

Bruce lost his battle with ALS in the spring of 2004 on the first day of the Masters. Bruce's story has been immortalized by bestselling author John Feinstein in Caddy For Life: The Bruce Edwards Story. A portion of the proceeds of the book will go directly to Driving 4 Life when purchased through Amazon.com using this link.

The Driving 4 Life campaign continues on in honor of Bruce, Jeff Julian and 30,000 ALS patients alive today.
